When a valve is fully open it will touch the piston if it's at the top of it's stroke...not good! The valve timing of the engine stops this from happening in normal operation but if a valve sticks open or the timing is out then they can collide with expensive results! There's probably a better technical explanation, but that's my understanding of the term.

Ah, I see, it was the term I wasn't familiar with :002:

Grumpy has it right.

The problem with interference engines is if the timing belt breaks you have serious piston and valve damage. High compression engines are often interference engines. Inazuma has 11.5:1 compresion ratio. Same thing can happen if a valve is stuck open. If your exhaust valve is stuck open you might be getting ignition resulting in excessive heat in your pipes.

Hi, only got it back Wednesday. Well, the cause was a faulty coil. A little beyond my technical knowledge but apparently it's connected to the ignition or something. They mentioned a wire becoming frayed,

...not sure what happened to the rest of my post there...
Cost of the coil was £17, total bill £129. Cost of extra fuel running my car to commute for a month, £150. So I guess all in all quite expensive experience over a £17 part.
Well, now that a month of glorious sunshine has been replaced with rain, I'm back on the road woohoo!!
