I knew of a guy once who had black everything.

Black bike, helmet, leathers, never used his headlight.

He assumed no one was looking and so never saw him, whatever he wore, and rode accordingly.

Not a bad theory, but I'm in favour of stacking the odds slightly higher in my favour

I don't think the assumption that folk haven't seen you is a bad one, but making yourself easier to see is common sense to me.

In my country, there is a Legal Assumption that reads like this:
'Any private action which does net affect a third person, is outside the reach of the law'

Basing unto this, there was a movement years ago that tried to eliminate the obligation to use the seat belt or helmet. However, if you have an accident and fly out the window, it takes a lot of money from the tax payers to send the cops and a judge to pick up your body instead of just a medic to clean your wounds.

Hiding in the dark on purpose can en up in an easily avoidable accident, that might your the life or either or both parties.

When I owned an Honda Shadow 1100 USA import it had as standard front indicator lights lit up at all times i thought they were a brilliant idea.

My Inazuma had the ligths on all the time, as does my GSR750 and my brothers V-Strom.

In some European countries it's law to have the lights on at all times, so manufacturers have done away with the switches.

It's not law here, yet, but it's cheaper for the manufacturers to use the same switchgear on models for all markets.

Keeping the bike's lights always on became law about 2 years ago in Costa Rica.
At first, I was against it, but after I avoided hitting a biker because I saw his light reflection in my car's mirror at 11 AM, I changed my mind.
(Who knows, maybe this always-on politics even obligates the manufacturer to install a more powerful electric generator  )
