strange noise coming from the clutch cover

There’s a strange noise coming from the clutch cover. At around 30,000 km, a noise appeared that disappears when I pull in the clutch lever. The mechanics said it was caused by the clutch basket and that it was safe to keep riding.

At 40,500 km, a new buzzing noise appeared in the same area. It can only be heard at idle. It does not disappear when I pull in the clutch, and its pitch increases as the engine speed rises up to about 3,000 RPM. Above that, it’s simply masked by the engine noise.

The oil was last changed at 39,000 km.

My concern is that it might be the oil pump, but the low oil pressure warning light never came on.

That sounds more like a worn clutch basket bearing, clutch hub, or possibly a loose primary gear than an oil pump issue, especially since the first noise disappeared when pulling the clutch lever.

The new buzzing at idle could also come from
    1. clutch basket dampers getting worn,
    2. a cam chain tensioner,
    3. or even gearbox/input shaft bearings.

If the oil pressure light never came on and the engine still runs normally, the oil pump is probably okay. Still, I would not ignore the new noise since it changed character compared to before.

    A good idea would be:

check for metal particles during the next oil change,
    inspect clutch basket play,
and listen with a mechanic’s stethoscope around the clutch cover and water pump area.

Did the noise appear suddenly or gradually?
