Sprocket and chain upgrade

Hello all,

Just want to gauge what you blokes reckon about installing a slightly bigger rear sprocket than the factory one.

Looking to bump it up by 2 teeth, so I can cruise at higher speeds i.e. on the local freeways, as at the moment, my Zuma wants to rev at around 7500 sitting at 100-110km/h.

And if I go to a slightly bigger sprocket, I'll obviously replace the chain, but is it worth whacking on a new front sprocket, so it's all brand new? That's what I'm leaning towards, that way everything is fresh gear.

Hi

if you search the forums there are many who dropped one tooth on the front (me included) without any issues. In fact if I remember right the revs dropped by about 500 rpm for the same mph. You would likely not notice that though as the speedo (which is driven off the gearbox) does not alter.  you do not need to alter the chain length. Well worth doing.

If however you 'get greedy' and alter it too much you will lose a lot of acceleration and the ability to maintain a high speed without your engine working a bit harder.

Look back at the forums and you will find a lot of info that is usefull.

Fitting a bigger rear sprocket will lower the gearing, not raise it.

To raise the gearing, make it better for more relaxed cruising, you need a smaller rear sprocket or a larger front.

The easiest, well proven method is to go for one extra tooth on the front. That's aprox the equivalent of going 3 teeth less on the rear
