Something to consider

Seeing all of the 'modifications' being talked about here I wondered what Suzuki's stance on it was so I gave them a quick call - don't worry I did not mention anyone's name or model of bike - it was just a 'what if scenario'   

As a basic modification question I asked what would void a warranty and was advised the parts fitted must be relevant to the problem encountered i.e. the dealer can only void your warranty if they can prove that your modifications were the cause of the issue. i.e. they can't void your warranty if your suspension fails because you changed your exhaust. If you have fitted Suzuki parts or Suzuki recommended parts by an authorised dealer and a problem occurs your warranty will cover the issue. However, 

I asked if drilling or changing exhausts affects warranty? I was advised that:
1 modifying (i.e. drilling holes) a stock exhaust voids engine warranty 
2 fitting other than a standard exhaust voids engine warranty 

I asked if changing a sprocket for other than the standard affects warranty? I was advised that:
The changing of sprockets for other than standard is considered a 'performance modification' and in the event of a problem would void your warranty. 

I asked if fitting an alarm or additional lighting would affect my warranty? I was advised that:
If a failure or worse case a fire consumed my bike and it was found that the alarm / additional lighting had caused additional usage of only a few amps to the motorcycle circuit then the warranty would be void and I would be responsible for repairs. 

I asked if fitting a carrier / top box would affect the warranty?
I was told it would if the frame subsequently developed a crack or the suspension, or any of it's parts failed due to the additional weight being carried. It is worth noting here that you are advised that you can only carry around 5kg additional weight on a carrier!! - That's about 2 packs of jelly babies (big packs!)   

I guess this is not what a few people were expecting to hear but I can see Suzuki's point really - any idiot can stick accessories onto a motorcycle or mess with the things already on without realising the potential damage they could cause! 

One final question was: would the warranty be affected if a dealer fitted parts that were not genuine Suzuki or Suzuki recommended parts and a problem occurred. I was advised that in this instance Suzuki would not cover the cost of repair / replacement but the dealer may, at his discretion, but is under no obligation to do so if the parts were not supplied by him.   

I guess the answer is clear guys - be careful what you are fitting / messing with and if you do replace any parts try to keep the originals close to hand so you can put them back on before taking your bike in for warranty issues!!

O go on, really.   I think it was a good posting.  I expect there are many members, me included, who have had these thoughts more than once.  Now all I have to do is take off my horn and put the genuine one back on.  Take off my rack because carrying four concrete blocks won't do and last but not least put the old dust caps back on.

Seriously though I bet many members also think that was a good posting.

Good op no suprises...except for the pannier /top rack. I just orderd mine and stopped by the dealer who is a couple blocks away from my office. The warranty mentioned the weight of 5kg on the carrier. My 2 boxes and the rack will weigh about 12 lbs empty. I wonder how they can state that in the warranty but it's ok to ride 2 up? Lawers are funny creatures

I agree...plus i find alot of enjoyment just having a beer and turning wrenchs on the bike...very relaxing!!

In a way I agree with Robell.  What's the point of worrying about warranties if you never make a claim.  Does anyone know of any warranty claims on this  Forum, or are Inazumas  so reliable that you would be unlikely to make a warranty claim anyway.
